Black Screen
Laptop runs — fans spin, keyboard lights up — but the display shows nothing. Multiple causes, very different fixes.
A black screen means the display shows no image while the laptop is otherwise running. It is one of the most common and most misdiagnosed laptop faults — because it has at least four distinct causes, each requiring a different repair.
The critical first step is always to plug in an external monitor. If the external display works, the fault is in the screen assembly — not the motherboard or GPU. If neither screen works, the fault is deeper.
| Cause | Torch test | External monitor | Likely fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backlight failure | Faint image visible | Works | Screen replacement |
| Flex cable fault | Sometimes | Works | Flex cable replacement |
| GPU fault | No image | Doesn’t work | Board-level repair |
| POST failure | No image | Doesn’t work | Diagnosis required |
Step 1 — Torch test: Shine a torch at the screen at an angle while the laptop is on. A faint image means the backlight has failed but the panel and GPU are fine.
Step 2 — External monitor: Connect via HDMI or USB-C. If the external display works, the fault is in the display assembly (backlight, panel, or flex cable).
Step 3 — Check lid angle: If the screen flickers or shows an image only at certain angles, the flex cable running through the hinge is failing.
If both screens are dead and the torch test shows nothing, the fault is board-level — GPU, POST, or power circuit. Bring it in for a free diagnosis before assuming the worst.
Why is my laptop screen black but the laptop is on? +
The most common reason is backlight failure — the panel is working but has no light behind it. Do the torch test: shine a light at the screen at an angle. If you can faintly see your desktop, that confirms a backlight fault. Other causes include a failing flex cable, GPU issue, or POST failure.
Can a black screen be fixed without replacing the whole laptop? +
Yes, in most cases. Backlight and flex cable faults are straightforward screen repairs. Even GPU and board-level faults can often be repaired via microsoldering — full board replacement is rarely necessary if the fault is localised.
Is a black screen always a hardware problem? +
Not always — a corrupted graphics driver or failed Windows update can cause a black screen on boot. If the laptop was working fine and went black after an update, try booting into Safe Mode first. If Safe Mode shows a display, the issue is software. If nothing shows in Safe Mode either, it’s hardware.
How much does black screen repair cost in Singapore? +
It depends on the cause. A flex cable replacement is typically the least expensive. Screen assembly replacement varies by brand and panel type. Board-level GPU repair is more involved. We diagnose for free and give you a quote before any work begins.
Should I turn my laptop off if the screen goes black? +
Yes — if the screen suddenly goes black and doesn’t recover, power off cleanly if possible (hold the power button). Continued use with no display risks missing shutdown prompts and potentially corrupting data. Connect an external monitor if you need to keep working while waiting for repair.
