In most cases, yes. If the repair costs less than half of what a comparable laptop would cost, and the laptop still does what you need, repair it. Most common faults cost $50–$200 to fix, while a decent new laptop costs $800 or more.
The exceptions are a dead motherboard on an older machine, a laptop that was already too slow for your work, or a repair stacked on top of other failing parts.
⚖ The 50% Rule
Take the repair quote and compare it with the price of a laptop that does the same job.
- Under 30%: repair. This covers almost every battery, screen, keyboard, hinge and cleaning job.
- 30–50%: repair if the laptop is under five years old and fast enough for you.
- Over 50%: replace, unless you need the exact machine (specific software, a licence tied to it, or a high-end model that would cost far more to buy again).
Example: a $150 screen on a laptop that would cost $900 to replace is 17%. Repair it. A $600 motherboard swap on a six-year-old $700 laptop is 86%. Replace it.

🔄 When Replacing Makes More Sense
- Full motherboard replacement on a laptop more than five years old. Component-level repair ($150–$300) is often still worth it, but a full board swap rarely is.
- Severe water damage across the board, keyboard and screen together.
- The laptop no longer meets your needs. If it was struggling before it broke, fixing it gets you back to struggling.
- No longer gets security updates. A laptop that can’t run a supported version of Windows or macOS is a risk for banking and work.
- Several parts failing at once. One repair is fine; a battery, a hinge and a screen in the same year is a pattern.
💡 Don’t Forget the Cheaper Middle Option
Many laptops that feel ready for replacement just need an upgrade. Swapping a hard drive for an SSD and adding RAM often makes a four- to six-year-old laptop feel new for under $200. Our glossary entry on upgrading vs replacing parts explains the difference.
If your budget won’t stretch to new, a tested ex-corporate laptop is another route. Our used laptops start from $249 with a 90-day warranty.
Repairing keeps a working laptop out of e-waste and avoids the emissions of making a new one, which is where most of a laptop’s lifetime footprint comes from. It is one more reason to repair when the numbers are close.
