Signs Your GPU Needs Repair
Laptop powers on but the screen stays black, or an external monitor also shows nothing. Often a sign of a dead GPU chip or failed solder joints — this is diagnosed and, where possible, fixed at board level.
Distorted textures, coloured static, or screen tearing during gaming or video usually points to a failing GPU chip or VRAM — this can often be resolved with a reflow or reballing repair.
The fan bearing has worn out. A grinding, rattling, or clicking sound — especially under GPU load — means the bearing is failing. Left unfixed, the fan can seize entirely and the GPU overheats within minutes.
If your GPU hits 85–90°C and games start stuttering or dropping frames, the fan is no longer moving enough air. Thermal throttling kicks in automatically to prevent permanent damage.
Complete fan failure. Without active cooling your GPU will hit thermal limits and shut down within minutes of load. This requires immediate attention.
Fan runs at full speed even at idle. Usually means the fan RPM sensor has failed, or the fan is struggling to cool a GPU that is already running dangerously hot.
If Device Manager doesn’t detect the graphics card, or the system only crashes during games and 3D apps (fine otherwise), this points to a hardware-level GPU fault rather than a software issue.
No Display or Artifacting? Board-Level GPU Repair
Not every GPU fault is fan or thermal related. Laptop GPUs are soldered directly to the motherboard, so faults like no display, artifacting, or a GPU that’s not detected often trace back to the chip itself — not something a fan clean or repaste will fix.
Reheats existing solder joints beneath the GPU chip to re-bond cracked or lifted connections caused by thermal stress. Faster and cheaper, and effective for many no-display and artifacting cases.
A more thorough repair — the chip is removed, old solder balls replaced, and the chip reattached. Used when reflow alone isn’t enough to fully resolve the fault.
If the chip itself has failed beyond repair, we assess whether a motherboard or GPU module swap is viable and cost-effective versus other options.
We diagnose first and always tell you honestly whether board-level repair makes sense compared to the value of the laptop. No pressure to proceed.
GPU Fan vs CPU Fan — What’s the Difference?
✓ GPU Fan
- Spins faster under gaming and graphics-intensive tasks
- Often the louder of the two under full load
- Dedicated to cooling the graphics card
- Gaming laptops typically have one fan per chip
- Failing GPU fan = overheating during games
⋅ CPU Fan
- More active during general computing tasks
- Spins up during video calls, compiling, browser use
- Dedicated to cooling the processor
- Can continue working even if GPU fan fails
- Failing CPU fan = throttling during everyday tasks
Many laptops have two separate fans — one for each chip. We diagnose each independently so you only pay for what actually needs fixing. Not sure which fan is making the noise, or whether it’s fan-related at all? We identify it during the free diagnosis. See our Cooling & Fan Glossary for plain-English definitions of GPU fan, thermal throttling, repasting, heatsink, and more.
How We Do It
Why Choose Affordable Laptop Services?
We check display output, GPU temps, and fan RPM before recommending anything. No guesswork, no unnecessary parts.
Most fan and thermal repairs are completed in 2–3 hours. Walk in, get diagnosed, collect same day.
No-display and artifacting faults handled by our own technicians — no outsourcing to third-party board repair shops.
ASUS ROG, MSI, Razer, Alienware, HP Omen, Lenovo Legion, Acer Predator, Nitro, Dell, and all standard laptops with dedicated GPUs.
Every GPU repair is covered. If there’s any issue after collection, we fix it at no cost.
Bugis, Bedok, Jurong East, and Ang Mo Kio. Open daily 11am–9pm.
Frequently Asked Questions
My laptop has no display — is that always the GPU?
Not always, but it’s one of the most common causes. During diagnosis we rule out RAM, display cable, and screen faults before confirming a GPU chip issue and whether reflow or reballing can fix it.
Can artifacting be fixed, or does the GPU need replacing?
Many artifacting cases are caused by cracked solder joints and can be resolved with a reflow or reballing repair. If the chip itself has failed, we’ll advise whether replacement is viable and cost-effective.
How do I know if it’s the GPU fan or CPU fan making the noise?
We identify this during the free diagnosis using RPM monitoring tools. As a rough guide, GPU fans are louder under gaming and graphics tasks; CPU fans spin up more during everyday computing. Bring it in and we’ll confirm for free.
Can a noisy GPU fan damage my graphics card?
Yes. A failing fan bearing can seize without warning, causing the GPU to overheat rapidly. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures degrades the chip permanently — sometimes leading to the exact no-display or artifacting faults we repair at board level. Address grinding or rattling sounds quickly.
How long does GPU repair take?
Fan and thermal repairs are usually completed in 2–3 hours, same day. Board-level repairs like reflow or reballing typically take longer — we’ll give you a timeline after diagnosis.
Will fan repair fix my overheating?
In most cases, yes — if the fan is the root cause. We also replace thermal paste during every fan service to maximise the cooling improvement. If the heatsink or GPU chip itself is damaged, we’ll advise separately.
Do you repair GPUs on gaming laptops with dual fans?
Yes. We service dual-fan and vapour chamber cooling systems found in gaming laptops. We diagnose each fan independently and only replace what is actually faulty.
How much does GPU repair cost in Singapore?
From $50 for fan cleaning, $80 for fan replacement, $90 for cleaning + thermal paste, and from $150 for board-level reflow/reballing on no-display or artifacting faults. Call 9750 4333 for an exact quote based on your model and fault.
