Battery Health
A percentage showing how much charge capacity your battery retains compared to when it was new. The number that tells you whether replacement is worth it.
Battery health measures how much charge capacity your battery can hold compared to its original design capacity. A brand-new battery is 100%. As it ages through charge cycles, heat, and normal use, this percentage drops.
It is the single most useful number for assessing whether a battery needs replacing. Short runtime complaints are almost always explained by the battery health percentage.
Run powercfg /batteryreport in an elevated Command Prompt. Open the HTML file and look for Full Charge Capacity vs Design Capacity.
Hold Option, click Apple menu, System Information, Power. Cycle count and battery Condition are listed under Battery Information.
HWiNFO64 (Windows) and CoconutBattery (Mac) give clear battery health readings. Both are free.
| Battery Health | What to Expect | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 80-100% | Near-original runtime | No action needed |
| 60-79% | Noticeably reduced runtime | Plan for replacement soon |
| 40-59% | 1-2 hrs max | Replace recommended |
| Below 40% | Very short runtime, possible swelling | Replace immediately |
Heat is the biggest enemy of lithium battery health. Singapore’s year-round heat degrades laptop batteries 20-30% faster than cooler climates. A battery that might last 4-5 years in Europe may need replacing after 2-3 years here.
Avoid leaving your laptop in direct sunlight or in a hot car. Using it on a hard surface with airflow reduces heat buildup and slows degradation.
What is a good battery health percentage?
Above 80% is good. Below 70% you’ll notice reduced runtime. Below 50%, replacement is strongly recommended for anyone using the laptop away from a plug.
Can laptop battery health be restored?
No — battery health decline is a physical process that cannot be reversed by software or calibration.
How long does a laptop battery last in Singapore?
Typically 2-3 years before health drops noticeably, due to heat. With careful use, some last 3-4 years.
How much does battery replacement cost in Singapore?
Varies by brand. Free health check, same-day replacement, 90-day warranty.
