Hinges, keyboards, trackpads — physical damage terms explained simply so you know exactly what’s being repaired and why.
The mechanical joint connecting the screen to the base. Hinges take thousands of open/close cycles over a laptop’s life. A broken hinge causes the lid to flop open or closed, cracks the chassis around the hinge mount, or damages the flex cable routed through it. Address hinge faults early — they worsen rapidly with continued use.
On most laptops the keyboard is a replaceable module. Individual key failures after liquid spills, keys that feel sticky or don’t register, or a fully dead keyboard are all repairable. On MacBook Pro models with the butterfly keyboard (2016–2019), individual key replacement is more complex due to the mechanism design.
The touch-sensitive input surface below the keyboard. Trackpad faults include erratic cursor movement, unresponsive clicks, or the trackpad not being detected at all. A swollen battery pushing up against the trackpad from below is a common cause of sudden trackpad failure — always worth checking before replacing the trackpad itself.
A small M.2 or PCIe card providing wireless connectivity. WiFi cards can fail after liquid exposure, physical impact, or driver corruption. Symptoms: no WiFi networks detected, constant disconnections, or slow speeds. On most laptops the WiFi card is replaceable in under 30 minutes.
The plastic or metal frame surrounding the laptop screen. Bezels crack from drops, separate from the lid after hinge damage, or warp after liquid exposure. A damaged bezel is mostly cosmetic but can press against the screen causing display issues, or leave the panel unsupported and vulnerable to further damage.
The top case surface where your hands rest when typing. On most laptops the palm rest, keyboard, and sometimes trackpad are part of a single “top case” assembly. Cracked or damaged palm rests are usually replaced as a unit. MacBook top case replacements include the keyboard and battery as a combined assembly.
