Microsoldering
Board-level repair using a microscope and precision tools to replace individual components on the motherboard. When available, it can fix faults that would otherwise require a full board replacement — saving hundreds of dollars.

Microsoldering is the practice of repairing circuit boards at the component level — removing and replacing individual capacitors, resistors, MOSFETs, ICs, and other tiny components using a microscope, fine-tipped soldering iron, and hot air rework station.
Components on a modern laptop motherboard are extremely small — many are less than 1mm across. Not all repair shops offer microsoldering — it’s what separates component-level repair from basic board swaps.
- Failed power delivery — blown fuses, capacitors, MOSFETs in the charging circuit
- USB-C port replacement when soldered directly to the motherboard
- BGA chip reballing or replacement (GPU, RAM, storage controller)
- Liquid damage repair — replacing corroded components after ultrasonic cleaning
- DC jack replacement when soldered to the board
- BIOS chip replacement or reflashing
| Microsoldering | Board Replacement | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Lower (component cost only) | Higher (full board cost) |
| Data preservation | Original board — data intact | May require data migration |
| Availability | Not offered at all shops | Depends on parts availability |
| Best for | Localised, identifiable faults | Widespread or unrepairable damage |
Is microsoldering reliable?
In experienced hands, yes. The repaired component is typically as reliable as it was originally. Correct diagnosis first is the key.
Can all laptop faults be fixed with microsoldering?
No — widespread corrosion, burnt board traces, or failed BGA chips where parts aren’t available may not be repairable. Diagnosis determines what’s possible.
How long does microsoldering repair take?
Simple repairs (blown fuse, single capacitor) can be done same-day. BGA reball or multi-component liquid damage may take 1–3 days.
Do all repair shops offer microsoldering?
No — it requires specialist equipment and training. Many shops only offer board replacements. Affordable Laptop Services offers full component-level microsoldering repair.
Free diagnosis. Component-level microsoldering — we don’t replace boards when a chip fix will do.
