IPS
In-Plane Switching — the best mainstream LCD panel type. Better colours, wider viewing angles, and the standard you should insist on when getting a screen replaced.
IPS is a type of LCD panel where the liquid crystals are aligned horizontally. This produces accurate colours that stay consistent when viewed from any angle, unlike older TN panels which shift and wash out off-centre.
IPS is standard in most mid-range and premium laptops made after 2015. Colours look the same whether you view it straight-on or from the side.
| IPS | TN | OLED | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colour accuracy | Excellent | Poor | Excellent |
| Viewing angles | Wide | Narrow | Wide |
| Burn-in risk | None | None | Yes |
| Replacement cost | Moderate | Lowest | Highest |
When your IPS screen is replaced, panel type matters. Some shops substitute cheaper TN panels — the screen will work, but colours will be visibly worse and viewing angles dramatically narrower.
Always confirm with your technician that the replacement panel is IPS before the repair begins.
Is IPS better than a normal laptop screen?
IPS is better than older TN panels. The difference is most noticeable in colour accuracy and viewing angles — TN panels shift colour when viewed from the side, IPS stays consistent.
How do I know if my laptop has an IPS screen?
Tilt the screen backwards at a steep angle. If colours stay accurate, it’s IPS. If they invert or wash out dramatically, it’s TN.
Can an IPS screen be repaired or only replaced?
IPS panels cannot be repaired at the component level — cracked or failed panels must be replaced as a unit.
