LAPTOP REPAIR GLOSSARY / MACBOOK
MagSafe
Apple’s magnetic charging connector. Designed to detach safely if the cable is tripped over — preventing the laptop from being pulled off a desk. MagSafe returned with M-series MacBooks after a period of USB-C-only charging.
MagSafe has gone through several generations. Understanding which version your MacBook uses matters when you need a replacement charger or port repair.
MagSafe Versions
| Version | Years | Models | Shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| MagSafe 1 | 2006–2012 | MacBook, MacBook Pro | T-shaped |
| MagSafe 2 | 2012–2019 | MacBook Air, MacBook Pro (Retina) | Thinner, wider |
| MagSafe 3 | 2021–present | MacBook Pro 14/16″, MacBook Air M2+ | Magnetic USB-C style |
MagSafe Port Faults
Charger not attaching magnetically — Debris or lint inside the port blocking the magnet connection. Often fixable with cleaning.
Not charging even when connected — Could be the port, the cable, or a fault on the charging circuit on the logic board. Diagnosis needed.
Port physically damaged — On MagSafe 1/2 models, the port is a separate component and can be replaced. On MagSafe 3 (M-series), the port is part of the logic board assembly — more complex to repair.
