LAPTOP REPAIR GLOSSARY / MACBOOK

T2 Chip

A dedicated security chip in Intel-based MacBooks (2018–2020). The T2 handles encrypted storage, secure boot, Touch ID, and the “Hey Siri” function. A failed T2 can prevent the MacBook from booting at all.

The T2 is only present in Intel MacBooks. Apple Silicon Macs (M1 onwards) integrate equivalent security features directly into the M-series chip. If you have an M1 or later MacBook, there is no separate T2 chip.

What the T2 Chip Controls

🔒
Encrypted StorageThe T2 manages hardware-level encryption. If the T2 fails, the encrypted SSD is inaccessible — even in a new machine.
🚀
Secure BootVerifies that the OS loaded at startup is legitimate Apple software. T2 faults can cause boot failures that look identical to logic board failure.
👆
Touch IDTouch ID fingerprint data is stored securely in the T2. A T2 fault typically disables Touch ID entirely.

T2 Fault Symptoms

T2 faults often present identically to catastrophic logic board failure:

• MacBook won’t boot past Apple logo • Folder with question mark on startup • Touch ID completely non-functional • “No bootable device” error • Black screen after liquid damage

Note: These symptoms can also be caused by SSD failure or other logic board faults. Specialist diagnosis is needed to confirm.
