LAPTOP REPAIR GLOSSARY / PROFESSIONAL SOFTWARE / FIGMA

Figma

Collaborative UI/UX design tool that runs in the browser or desktop app. One of the lightest professional design applications — the GPU accelerates the canvas, and RAM matters more than raw power for large files.

WHAT IT IS

Figma is the industry-standard tool for UI/UX design, wireframing, and interactive prototyping. It runs in the browser (WebGL/WebGPU-accelerated canvas) or as a desktop app, with real-time collaboration — multiple designers can work in the same file simultaneously, which is why design schools and agencies have standardised on it.

KEY HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

  • CPU: Any modern CPU handles Figma. Fast single-core speed keeps large files and plugins snappy.
  • RAM: 8 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended — browser tabs plus big design files are memory-hungry.
  • GPU: Integrated graphics work; any dedicated GPU makes panning and zooming huge canvases buttery smooth.
  • Display: The real upgrade — a 1440p or dual-monitor setup for design-plus-prototype workflows.
🎓 TAUGHT IN SINGAPORE SCHOOLS

Figma is part of the official curriculum at:

  • Temasek Polytechnic — Diploma in Product Experience & Design (T35), School of Design. Students develop proficiency in Figma alongside Rhino CAD, KeyShot, and Adobe Creative Suite.

Figma itself runs on almost anything — but the same diploma also requires Rhino and KeyShot, which is where a proper GPU desktop pays off.

PEOPLE ALSO ASK

Does Figma need a powerful PC?

No — Figma is one of the lightest professional design tools. Any recent PC with 8–16 GB RAM runs it well. Performance issues usually come from very large files or too many browser tabs, not weak hardware.

Why is my Figma lagging?

Common causes: low RAM with many tabs open, hardware acceleration disabled in the browser, an outdated GPU driver, or a single file with thousands of layers. Enabling hardware acceleration and adding RAM fixes most cases.

Building a design-course PC?

We build tested desktops that cover the full poly design stack — Figma, Rhino, KeyShot, and Adobe — from $600.
