How Long Do Laptops Last?

Is a 7-year-old laptop too old? Lifespan by laptop type, the signs it’s near the end, and how to get more years out of it.

Most laptops last 4 to 7 years. Budget models tend to reach the end of their useful life around 3–5 years, while business laptops and MacBooks often run 6–8. A 7-year-old laptop isn’t automatically too old: if it still runs a supported operating system and handles your work, it can keep going, often with a cheap upgrade.

⏳ Typical Lifespan by Laptop Type

Laptop type Typical useful life Why
Budget consumer (under $700) 3–5 years Thinner builds, slower storage, often 4–8GB RAM soldered in
Mid-range consumer 4–6 years Decent parts, but plastic hinges and cases wear
Business (ThinkPad, Latitude, EliteBook) 5–8 years Built for fleets: sturdier hinges, replaceable parts
MacBook 6–8 years Long OS support, solid build
Gaming laptop 4–6 years Heat stresses parts; new games outpace the GPU

These are typical ranges, not limits. Care and usage matter as much as the badge.

📅 Is a 7-Year-Old Laptop Too Old?

Ask three questions:

  1. Does it still get security updates? If it can’t run a supported version of Windows or macOS, it is time to replace it, especially if you bank or work on it.
  2. Is it fast enough for what you do? For browsing, documents and video calls, a 7-year-old laptop with an SSD and 8GB+ RAM is usually fine. For editing, gaming or design work, it probably isn’t.
  3. What would it cost to keep going? A battery and SSD might cost $160–$280 together. Compare that with replacing it, using our repair or replace rule.

If the answers are yes, yes and “not much”, keep it.

⚠ Signs Your Laptop Is Near the End

  • It no longer receives operating system or security updates.
  • It is slow even after a clean Windows install and an SSD.
  • Several parts fail in the same year: battery, hinge, keyboard, screen.
  • The motherboard needs a full replacement.
  • The software you rely on won’t install or run on it.

One worn part is not one of these signs. Batteries wear out by design; see how long laptop batteries last.

🔧 How to Make a Laptop Last Longer

  • Swap the hard drive for an SSD. The biggest single speed boost for an older laptop. SSD upgrade from $80.
  • Add RAM if there’s a free slot. 8GB is the practical minimum today; 16GB is comfortable. RAM upgrade from $60.
  • Clean the fan once a year. Singapore’s heat and humidity make dust build-up and overheating common. Fan cleaning from $50.
  • Replace the battery when it swells or drops below about 80% health. A swollen battery can crack the trackpad and case.
  • Fix hinges early. A loose hinge left alone can break the case and screen cable.
  • Use it on a hard, flat surface. Beds and sofas block the vents.
⚠ Swollen battery?

If the trackpad is lifting or the case is bulging, stop charging the laptop and bring it in. A swollen battery won’t go back to normal and can damage the case around it.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Can a laptop last 10 years?

Some business laptops and MacBooks do, with an SSD, a new battery and light use. Most consumer laptops won’t stay practical that long.

Does leaving a laptop plugged in shorten its life?

It wears the battery a little faster on some models, not the whole laptop. See our post on whether to leave your laptop on.

Is it worth upgrading an old laptop?

If it has a hard drive or under 8GB RAM, usually yes. Upgrades cost a fraction of a new laptop.
