Preparing To Clean
Assemble the necessary supplies before starting. A laptop cleaning kit typically includes:
- Laptop cleaning brush (for dust from hard-to-reach surfaces)
- Lint-free microfiber cloths (for wiping exterior)
- Compressed air can (for vents and fans)
- 99% isopropyl alcohol or dedicated electronics cleaning solution
- Cotton swabs (for tight spaces)
Prepare a well-lit workspace with ample space to keep all components accounted for throughout the process.
Types Of Cleaners To Use
- Laptop cleaning solutions: Alcohol-based liquids applied with a lint-free cloth. Never spray directly onto the laptop — spray onto the cloth first. Quick-drying and safe for keyboards and ports.
- Laptop cleaning wipes: Pre-moistened sheets for spot-cleaning. Great for travel. Remove dirt, dust, and fingerprints without liquid spill risk.
- Cleaning brush kit: Various brush sizes for reaching between keys and around ports. Use in combination with liquid or wipes for best results.

Disconnecting And Powering Down
Before any cleaning, disconnect all external devices (USB drives, peripherals) and power down completely by pressing and holding the power button or selecting Shut Down. Unplug all power cords. This prevents electrical damage from static discharge or unexpected surges.
Cleaning The Interior
- Prepare your workspace with good lighting and all tools ready (screwdriver set, small brush, compressed air)
- Turn off and unplug the laptop. Remove battery if removable.
- Remove bottom cover by unscrewing the bottom panel screws. Keep screws in a safe container. Gently lift the cover.
- Clean the interior using a small brush or compressed air to remove dust. Focus especially on fans and heatsinks which accumulate the most dust. Do NOT touch components or circuit boards.
- Reassemble carefully. Ensure all connectors are properly seated before securing screws.
- Test that keyboard, touchpad, and display all function correctly after reassembly.
Wiping Down The Exterior
Use only a soft microfiber cloth dampened with a laptop-safe cleaner. Never spray directly onto the laptop surface. Wipe gently without pressing hard. Around ports and slots — spray onto the cloth, not directly at the ports. Aerosol cleaners can corrode electronics and create static buildup — avoid them entirely.

Cleaning The Keyboard And Touchpad
- Shut down and unplug the laptop
- Use compressed air between keys in short bursts (hold can upright)
- Use keyboard cleaning putty pressed gently between keys to pick up crumbs and debris
- Wipe touchpad with a microfiber cloth dampened with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol
- Use a soft-bristled brush on edges and corners of keyboard
- Use a disinfectant electronics wipe to sanitise surfaces
- Allow to air dry for a few minutes before using
Cleaning The Display Screen
- Turn off the laptop and unplug it first
- Use a lint-free cloth dampened with clean water or rubbing alcohol
- Wipe in one direction — never scrub or press hard
- For stubborn stains: use a small amount of baking soda paste on a soft cloth and gently rub
- Allow the screen to dry completely before powering on
⚠️ Never spray liquid directly onto the screen.
Cleaning The Fans And Vents
Use compressed air to remove dust from fans and vents — the most effective and safe method. Always power off and unplug before starting. Hold the fan blades still while blowing air to prevent spin damage. Never use compressed air if liquid is present in the vents. Use a soft-bristled brush for remaining debris. Verify all fans spin freely before powering on.
Safety Precautions
- Never use harsh chemicals or aerosol sprays on any part of the laptop
- Never use a vacuum cleaner on internal components (static risk)
- Always spray cleaning solutions onto cloth, not directly onto laptop
- Ground yourself with an anti-static wrist strap before touching internal components
- If unsure, seek professional cleaning from an experienced technician
