LAPTOP REPAIR GLOSSARY / PC HARDWARE / BSOD

BSOD (Blue Screen of Death)

A Windows stop error that halts the system to prevent damage when it detects a critical fault. Can be caused by driver conflicts, failing RAM, corrupt storage, overheating, or faulty hardware. Persistent BSODs almost always indicate a hardware problem.

WHAT IT IS

A BSOD (Blue Screen of Death), officially called a Windows Stop Error, occurs when Windows detects a condition it cannot safely recover from. The system halts, displays a blue screen with an error code, and restarts. If BSODs happen repeatedly, the underlying fault must be diagnosed and fixed. Category: PC Hardware / Windows Error

COMMON CAUSES

Failing or incompatible RAM — Memory errors are the most common hardware cause of BSODs. Run MemTest86 to check.
Corrupt or failing storage — Bad sectors on HDD or a failing SSD can cause the OS to blue screen during reads.
Overheating CPU or GPU — Thermal throttling at critical temperatures triggers an emergency shutdown. If your PC is dusty, a desktop clean can fix this.
Driver conflicts — Outdated or corrupt GPU drivers are a frequent software-side BSOD cause.
PSU voltage instability — A dying PSU delivering inconsistent voltage causes random crashes and BSODs.

PEOPLE ALSO ASK

Is a BSOD always a hardware problem?

Not always — a single BSOD can be caused by a bad driver update or software conflict. Repeated BSODs with the same error code almost always point to a hardware fault.

What should I do if I keep getting BSODs?

Note the error code, check if it started after a driver or Windows update, and run memory and storage diagnostics. If the issue persists, bring it in for diagnosis.

Can overheating cause a BSOD?

Yes — if your CPU or GPU hits thermal limits, Windows will crash to prevent damage. If BSODs happen during gaming or under load, a dust clean and thermal paste replacement is the first thing to try.

Can you fix a PC with frequent BSODs in Singapore?

Yes — our desktop repair service includes same-day diagnosis. We identify whether it’s RAM, storage, GPU, PSU, or another hardware fault.
