LAPTOP REPAIR GLOSSARY / CPU COOLER

CPU Cooler

A component that draws heat away from the CPU and dissipates it into the case airstream. The two main types are air tower coolers and AIO liquid coolers.

AIR TOWER VS AIO LIQUID COOLER
AIR TOWER COOLER

Heatpipes draw heat from the CPU into aluminium fins, cooled by one or two fans. No pump, no liquid — reliable and long-lasting.

Best value for most builds

AIO LIQUID COOLER

Liquid circulates from a pump block on the CPU to a radiator mounted on the case. Better peak performance but has pump failure risk over time.

Better for overclocked high-end CPUs

WHEN TO UPGRADE YOUR CPU COOLER
  • CPU temps exceed 80°C at idle or 95°C under load
  • Fan is noisy at full speed trying to compensate
  • You’ve upgraded to a higher-TDP CPU than your cooler was designed for
  • Stock cooler with no heatspreader contact (dried or never applied paste)
  • Building an ARGB-themed PC and want a matching cooler
