Heatsink
A metal assembly that absorbs heat from the CPU/GPU and conducts it away via copper heat pipes to the fan. Dust clogs reduce airflow significantly — cleaning is part of every full thermal service.

The heatsink is a passive cooling component — a block of thermally conductive metal that sits on top of the CPU and/or GPU. It absorbs heat and conducts it through copper heat pipes to thin metal fins at the exhaust end, where the fan blows air through them.
The heatsink doesn’t move or fail mechanically — but it accumulates dust over time. A heavily clogged heatsink can dramatically reduce airflow, negating the fan’s ability to cool the system.
Dust acts as an insulating layer on the heatsink fins. Over 1–3 years, a mat of compacted dust can form across the exhaust fins, restricting airflow to near zero — causing temperatures to spike under load despite the fan spinning at full speed.
In Singapore’s humid environment, dust accumulates faster. Annual cleaning is a worthwhile preventive measure for any laptop more than 2 years old.
A proper heatsink clean requires opening the laptop and physically removing dust from the fins — compressed air alone through the vents is insufficient for heavy buildup.
Heatsink cleaning is always performed alongside a repaste — since the heatsink is removed to access the fins, replacing the thermal paste at the same time is standard practice.
How often should I clean my laptop heatsink?
Every 1–2 years for most users. Annual cleaning is advisable in Singapore’s humid environment. Gaming laptops may need cleaning every 12 months.
Can I clean the heatsink with compressed air through the vents?
For light maintenance, yes. But for a heatsink with compacted dust, external compressed air just pushes surface dust around. A full internal clean requires opening the laptop.
Can a heatsink fail permanently?
Rarely — the most common failure is a kinked or dried-out heat pipe, which significantly reduces thermal conductivity and may require heatsink replacement.
How much does heatsink cleaning cost in Singapore?
Included in our thermal service — always combined with repasting. Free diagnosis, same-day service.
Heatsink clean + repaste restores full thermal performance. Free diagnosis, same-day service.
