LAPTOP REPAIR GLOSSARY / COOLING & FAN / HEATSINK

Heatsink

A metal assembly that absorbs heat from the CPU/GPU and conducts it away via copper heat pipes to the fan. Dust clogs reduce airflow significantly — cleaning is part of every full thermal service.

WHAT IT IS

The heatsink is a passive cooling component — a block or plate of thermally conductive metal (usually copper or aluminium) that sits directly on top of the CPU and/or GPU. It absorbs heat from the chip and conducts it through copper heat pipes to a set of thin metal fins at the exhaust end of the laptop, where the fan blows air through them.

The heatsink itself doesn’t move and doesn’t fail mechanically — but it does accumulate dust and debris over time. A heavily clogged heatsink can reduce airflow through the fins dramatically, negating the fan’s ability to cool the system.

HOW DUST AFFECTS PERFORMANCE

Dust acts as an insulating layer on the heatsink fins. Over 1–3 years of use, a mat of compacted dust can form across the exhaust fins — sometimes so thick it’s visible through the vent slots. This restricts airflow to near zero, causing temperatures to spike under load despite the fan spinning at full speed.

In Singapore’s environment, dust accumulates faster in humid conditions. Laptops used on carpet or fabric surfaces (beds, sofas) also pull more fibre and dust into the cooling system. Annual cleaning is a worthwhile preventive measure for any laptop more than 2 years old.

WHAT CLEANING INVOLVES

A proper heatsink clean requires opening the laptop and physically removing dust from the fins — compressed air alone through the vents is insufficient for heavy buildup. The heatsink is removed, fins are cleaned individually, and the heat pipes are inspected for deformation.

Heatsink cleaning is always performed alongside a repaste — since the heatsink is removed to access the fins, replacing the thermal paste between the chip and heatsink at the same time is standard practice.

PEOPLE ALSO ASK

How often should I clean my laptop heatsink? +

Every 1–2 years for most users. Annual cleaning is advisable in Singapore’s humid environment or if the laptop is used on soft surfaces. Gaming laptops that run at high fan speeds for extended periods accumulate dust faster and may need cleaning every 12 months.

Can I clean the heatsink with compressed air through the vents? +

For light maintenance between full services, yes — compressed air can dislodge loose dust from the vents. But for a heatsink with a compacted dust mat, external compressed air just pushes surface dust around without clearing the blockage inside the fins. A full internal clean requires opening the laptop.

Can a heatsink fail permanently? +

Rarely — heatsinks are passive components with no moving parts. The most common failure is a kinked or dried-out heat pipe (the copper tubes that carry heat from the chip to the fins). A kinked heat pipe significantly reduces thermal conductivity and may require heatsink replacement.
