LAPTOP REPAIR GLOSSARY / COOLING & FAN / FAN

Laptop Fan

The active cooling component that draws air across the heatsink and expels hot air. When it fails, temperatures spike, performance drops, and hardware damage follows quickly.

WHAT IT IS

The laptop fan is an active cooling component — a small, high-speed blower that draws cool air in through vents, directs it across the heatsink fins, and expels hot air out through exhaust vents. Most laptops have one or two fans depending on their thermal design.

The fan is the only active element in a laptop’s cooling system — everything else (heatsink, heat pipes, thermal paste) is passive. If the fan fails, there is nothing left to move heat out of the chassis, and temperatures climb rapidly to dangerous levels.

SIGNS OF FAN FAILURE

  • Grinding or clicking noise — bearing failure inside the fan motor
  • Fan always at full speed — fan spinning at 100% trying to compensate for low airflow
  • Fan completely silent when it should be spinning — motor failure or disconnected fan cable
  • Laptop very hot to touch — especially on the underside near the exhaust
  • Thermal throttling or sudden shutdowns — CPU/GPU hitting critical temperature
  • Error on startup — some laptops detect fan failure and show a warning before booting
WHAT THE REPAIR INVOLVES

Fan replacement involves disassembling the laptop, disconnecting the old fan, and fitting a replacement. On most laptops this also includes cleaning the heatsink fins and vents — dust buildup in the heatsink is often what caused the fan to work harder and fail sooner.

A fan replacement is almost always combined with a repaste — since the laptop is already opened, replacing dried thermal paste at the same time restores full thermal performance. Doing both in one service is more cost-effective than two separate visits.

PEOPLE ALSO ASK

Why is my laptop fan so loud? +

A loud fan usually means the laptop is running hot — the fan is spinning faster to try to cool the system. This is often caused by a dusty heatsink, dried thermal paste, or a partially failing fan bearing. If the fan is making a grinding or rattling noise rather than just spinning loudly, the bearing is failing and the fan needs replacing.

How long do laptop fans last? +

Most laptop fans last 3–5 years under normal use. Fans that run at high speed frequently — gaming laptops, laptops used in hot environments — wear out faster. In Singapore’s heat, fan bearing degradation is common after 3 years.

Can I use my laptop if the fan isn’t working? +

No — using a laptop with a failed fan will cause temperatures to spike rapidly. The CPU/GPU will throttle severely, performance will drop to near-zero, and within minutes the laptop may shut down to prevent damage. Prolonged use with no fan can permanently damage the CPU, GPU, or motherboard. Get it repaired immediately.
