LAPTOP REPAIR GLOSSARY / COOLING & FAN / GPU FAN

GPU Fan

A dedicated cooling fan for the graphics card on gaming laptops. GPU temperatures above 85°C under load, grinding noises during gaming, or a fan stuck at 100% are all warning signs.

WHAT IT IS

Gaming laptops with discrete GPUs (NVIDIA GeForce, AMD Radeon) typically have two separate fans: one cooling the CPU and one cooling the GPU. The GPU fan is dedicated to keeping the graphics chip within safe operating temperatures during graphically intensive tasks like gaming, 3D rendering, and video editing.

On some laptops the two fans share a single heatsink assembly (shared heat pipe design). On others they are independent. A failing GPU fan affects gaming performance specifically — the CPU may continue performing normally while GPU tasks degrade.

SIGNS OF GPU FAN FAILURE

  • Grinding or rattling noise specifically during gaming or GPU-intensive tasks
  • GPU temperatures consistently above 85–90°C under load (check with HWiNFO64 or GPU-Z)
  • GPU fan stuck at 100% constantly even at idle
  • GPU fan showing 0 RPM in monitoring software while the laptop is hot
  • Game performance dropping suddenly after 15–20 minutes of play (GPU throttling)
  • Laptop crashing or restarting during gaming sessions

PEOPLE ALSO ASK

How do I know if it’s the CPU or GPU fan making noise? +

If the noise starts or worsens specifically during gaming or when the GPU is under load, the GPU fan is the likely culprit. If it happens during general use — web browsing, document editing — the CPU fan is more likely. Monitoring tools like HWiNFO64 show each fan’s RPM and temperature separately, making diagnosis straightforward.

What GPU temperature is too hot for a laptop? +

Most laptop GPUs are designed to operate safely up to 85–95°C. Consistent temperatures above 85°C under load indicate inadequate cooling. Above 95°C the GPU will aggressively throttle. If you’re seeing 90°C+ regularly, a thermal service (fan clean + repaste) is warranted before the GPU sustains long-term damage.

Can a gaming laptop work without its GPU fan? +

Not for gaming — GPU temperatures will hit critical levels within minutes and the GPU will throttle to near-zero performance or the laptop will shut down. For basic tasks that don’t use the discrete GPU (web browsing, documents) the laptop may function, but gaming or any GPU workload is not possible safely.
