The laptop hinge is the mechanical joint that connects the display lid to the base. Most laptops have two hinges — one on each side. They provide controlled resistance when opening and closing, and must hold the lid at any angle without flopping open or closed.
Over a laptop’s lifetime, hinges open and close thousands of times. The hinge mechanism gradually wears, loosens, or seizes. The flex cable carrying the display signal also routes through the hinge assembly on most laptops.
