The laptop hinge is the mechanical joint that connects the display lid to the base. Most laptops have two hinges — one on each side of the lid. They provide controlled resistance when opening and closing the screen, and must hold the lid at any angle without flopping open or closed on their own.
Over a laptop’s lifetime, hinges open and close thousands of times. The hinge mechanism — typically a friction-based metal barrel — gradually wears, loosens, or seizes depending on the design and build quality. The flex cable carrying the display signal also routes through the hinge assembly on most laptops.

Additionally, the flex cable routes through the hinge area — a failed hinge that’s damaging the chassis can also be gradually crushing or kinking the flex cable, eventually causing display faults on top of the physical damage. Repairing a hinge early is a simple, affordable fix; repairing it after chassis damage is significantly more involved.
Can a laptop hinge be repaired or does it need replacing? +
In most cases the hinge assembly is replaced rather than repaired — the worn or broken hinge is removed and a replacement fitted. On some laptops the hinge is part of a larger assembly (screen back cover or hinge bracket) which may need to be replaced as a unit depending on the extent of the damage.
