SMC Reset
A System Management Controller reset clears low-level hardware settings that control power, thermals, battery, and sleep behaviour. It’s one of the most commonly Googled MacBook fixes — and often the first thing a technician will try.
The SMC (System Management Controller) is a chip on Intel MacBooks that manages hardware-level functions independently of macOS. On Apple Silicon Macs (M1+), there is no SMC — equivalent functions are handled by the M-series chip, and the reset process is different.
When to Try an SMC Reset
How to Reset the SMC
MacBook Pro / Air with T2 chip (2018–2020 Intel)
- Shut down the MacBook completely
- Hold: Control (left) + Option (left) + Shift (right) for 7 seconds
- While still holding those keys, also press and hold the Power button for another 7 seconds
- Release all keys, wait a few seconds, then power on normally
Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3)
There is no SMC on Apple Silicon. Instead, shut down the Mac, wait 30 seconds, and power on. For persistent issues, a full shutdown and restart usually achieves the same result.
If an SMC reset doesn’t resolve the issue, the fault is likely hardware:
