WHAT IT IS

The WiFi card provides the laptop’s wireless networking capability — both WiFi and Bluetooth, usually on the same card. It connects to the motherboard via an M.2 slot or, on older laptops, a PCIe mini card slot.

On most laptops the WiFi card is separately removable — two small antenna cables connect it to antennas embedded in the screen bezel. Replacement is typically straightforward.

SIGNS OF WIFI CARD FAILURE

  • No WiFi networks detected — adapter not showing in Device Manager
  • WiFi disconnects frequently or at random
  • Extremely slow speeds compared to other devices on the same network
  • Bluetooth also not working (both are usually on the same card)
  • WiFi stopped working after a liquid spill or physical impact
  • Driver reinstallation doesn’t fix the issue
SOFTWARE VS HARDWARE FAULT

WiFi issues are frequently software-related — corrupted drivers, Windows updates, or incorrect settings. Before assuming hardware failure, try reinstalling the WiFi driver and running Windows Network Troubleshooter.

Hardware failure is indicated when the adapter doesn’t appear in Device Manager at all, or when the problem appeared suddenly after physical damage or liquid exposure.

PEOPLE ALSO ASK

Why does my laptop WiFi keep disconnecting?

Frequent disconnections can be a driver issue, Windows power management settings, or early hardware failure. In Device Manager, disable “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”

Can a WiFi card be upgraded to a faster version?

Yes — upgrading from WiFi 5 to WiFi 6 is possible if the M.2 slot and BIOS are compatible. An inexpensive upgrade that can noticeably improve wireless speeds.
