LAPTOP REPAIR GLOSSARY / MACBOOK

NVRAM Reset (PRAM Reset)

NVRAM (Non-Volatile Random Access Memory) stores small system settings that persist even when the Mac is off — like volume, display resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone. Resetting it clears corrupted values that can cause odd behaviour.

PRAM (Parameter RAM) is the older Apple term for the same thing. You’ll see both used interchangeably. The reset process is identical.

When to Try an NVRAM Reset

🔊 Volume resets to maximum or zero on every startup
🖥️ Wrong display resolution or external monitor issues
📁 Mac boots from the wrong drive or shows startup disk errors
🕐 Clock resets to wrong date/time after restart
❓ Question mark folder appears on startup

How to Reset NVRAM

Intel MacBooks

  1. Shut down the MacBook
  2. Press the power button, then immediately hold Command + Option + P + R
  3. Hold for about 20 seconds (you’ll hear the startup chime twice on older models)
  4. Release the keys and let it boot normally

Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3)

NVRAM resets automatically on Apple Silicon when needed. You can trigger it manually by shutting down, waiting 30 seconds, and restarting. There is no key combination required.

If NVRAM and SMC resets don’t fix the issue, it’s likely a hardware fault:
