What Is Desktop HDD to SSD Cloning?

Cloning is the process of making a sector-by-sector copy of your existing desktop drive onto a new SSD. The result is an identical working system — your new drive boots exactly like the old one, with everything in place. Same speed boost as a fresh Windows install, without any of the reinstall hassle.

✓ What transfers

Your Windows installation (activated, licensed)
All installed applications
All personal files and folders
Desktop layout, browser bookmarks, saved passwords
Software settings and preferences
User accounts and passwords

✗ What does NOT transfer

Files already corrupted or inaccessible on the source drive
Data on a drive that has failed to the point of unreadability (data recovery is a separate service)
Cloning is different from a backup. A backup saves your files. Cloning copies your entire working system, ready to boot immediately from the new drive.

Desktop SSD Types — Which Does Your PC Take?

Desktop PCs typically support one or more of these drive types. Buying the wrong one is the most common mistake — we check compatibility before any work begins.

3.5" HDD Bay The standard spinning hard drive in most older towers. We clone this onto your new SSD and return the old drive to you.
2.5" SATA SSD Drop-in replacement for a 2.5" drive bay. Widely compatible with most desktop cases. Good speed improvement over HDD.
M.2 SATA SSD Slim card slot on your motherboard. Uses the SATA protocol — faster than a 2.5" HDD but slower than NVMe.
M.2 NVMe SSD The fastest option. Uses PCIe lanes — significantly faster than SATA. Most desktops built after 2017 have an M.2 NVMe slot.

💡 Not sure what your desktop supports? WhatsApp us your motherboard model and we’ll confirm before you buy anything. Or bring the PC in — we check for free.

Cloning vs Fresh Install — Which Do You Need?

Both options exist. Here’s when each makes sense for your desktop.

Choose Cloning when…

Upgrading to a faster SSD and want everything to carry over immediately
Large Steam library or specialist software (CAD, Adobe, accounting) that’s complex to reinstall
Want zero downtime — hand in the PC, collect it same day
Adding an SSD alongside your existing HDD as the new boot drive

Choose Fresh Install when…

System is full of issues, bloatware, or chronic performance problems
Upgrading to a significantly newer version of Windows
Want a completely clean slate
Current drive has bad sectors or file system errors

How We Do It

1
Drive Health CheckWe check your existing drive using SMART diagnostics. If it has bad sectors or signs of failure, we advise you before proceeding.
2
SSD Compatibility ConfirmedWe verify the new SSD is the correct type and interface for your desktop (2.5″ SATA, M.2 SATA, or NVMe). We can also supply the right SSD if you haven’t purchased one yet.
3
Sector-by-Sector CloneProfessional cloning software performs a full clone of your existing drive. Takes 30–90 minutes depending on data volume.
4
Partition ResizeWe expand the partition to fill the new SSD’s full capacity. Commonly missed in DIY clones — without it, your new 1TB SSD shows the size of your old 500GB drive.
5
Boot Test & Old Drive ReturnedWe boot from the new SSD and confirm everything works. Your original drive is returned to you — keep it as a backup or repurpose it as extra storage inside the same tower.

Why Choose Affordable Laptop Services?

Partition Resize Included Every clone includes a full partition resize. Your new SSD shows its complete capacity — not the size of the old drive.
Drive Health Check First We always check source drive health before cloning. If your old drive is failing, we tell you upfront — not after.
Same-Day Service Most desktop cloning jobs completed in 1–3 hours. Walk in, approve the quote, collect same day.
Old Drive Returned We never discard your original drive. Keep it as a second drive in the tower or as external storage in a USB enclosure.
90-Day Warranty Every cloning job is covered. If the new drive has any issue after the service, we fix it at no charge.
4 Locations Bugis, Bedok, Jurong East, and Ang Mo Kio. Open daily 11am–9pm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you clone a desktop PC drive, not just a laptop?

Yes — desktop PC cloning is one of our most common jobs. You can bring the full tower in, or just the drives if you’re comfortable removing them yourself.

Will my Windows licence still work after cloning?

Yes. Your Windows licence is tied to your hardware (motherboard), not the drive. Cloning preserves your existing activation — nothing changes on the licensing side.

Can I keep my old HDD as storage after cloning?

Yes — many desktops have multiple drive bays. We can install the new SSD as your boot drive and keep the old HDD as extra storage in the same tower. Just let us know when you bring it in.

What if the new SSD is smaller than my current drive?

The new drive must have enough capacity for all your used data — not match the total size. If your 2TB HDD has 600GB of data, a 1TB SSD works fine. We check this during diagnosis.

How long does desktop cloning take?

30–90 minutes for most desktops depending on data volume. Most customers collect same day.

Can you clone from a failing desktop HDD?

In most cases yes, as long as the drive is still readable. If it has bad sectors or signs of failure, we’ll advise you before starting — a data recovery step may be needed first.

Can you supply the SSD if I haven’t bought one yet?

Yes — we stock SATA and NVMe SSDs. We’ll confirm what your desktop supports and quote you before any work begins.
