WHAT IT IS

NVMe is a communication protocol designed specifically for flash storage. It uses the M.2 slot and connects directly to the CPU via PCIe lanes — bypassing the slower SATA controller used by traditional hard drives and SATA SSDs.

NVMe SSDs read at 3,000–7,000 MB/s compared to SATA SSDs at ~550 MB/s. Applications open faster, large files transfer in seconds, and the system feels more responsive.

NVMe VS SATA SSD

NVMe SSD SATA SSD
Read speed 3,000–7,000 MB/s ~550 MB/s
Interface PCIe via M.2 slot SATA or M.2 SATA
Common in Laptops 2018+ Older laptops, budget models
Price Slightly higher Slightly lower

DOES MY LAPTOP SUPPORT NVMe?

Most laptops made after 2018 support NVMe. Check your laptop’s spec sheet or run CrystalDiskInfo (Windows) to see the current drive type.

Some M.2 slots support only SATA, not NVMe. The slot looks identical but the supported protocol depends on the motherboard. Confirm before purchasing — or bring it in and we’ll check for free.

PEOPLE ALSO ASK

Is NVMe noticeably faster than SATA SSD for everyday use?

For large file transfers and app load times, yes. The bigger jump is from HDD to any SSD. For everyday browsing and Office tasks, a SATA SSD is already fast enough.

Can I put an NVMe SSD in any M.2 slot?

No — some M.2 slots only support SATA. The slot looks identical. Check your laptop’s spec sheet or have a technician confirm before purchasing.

What does PCIe Gen 4 vs Gen 3 NVMe mean?

Gen 4 is twice as fast as Gen 3 on paper. For most users the real-world difference is minimal. Gen 3 NVMe is excellent and typically costs less.

Do I need to reinstall Windows when upgrading to NVMe?

No — we clone your existing drive to the new NVMe. See our Hard Drive & SSD Cloning Service for how this works.
