WHAT IT IS

A Solid State Drive stores data on flash memory chips with no moving mechanical parts. This makes it dramatically faster, more durable, and more energy-efficient than a traditional spinning HDD.

SSDs are now standard in most laptops made after 2018. If your laptop still has an HDD, upgrading to an SSD is the fastest and most cost-effective way to improve performance.

SSD VS HDD

SSD HDD
Boot time 10–20 seconds 2–5 minutes
Moving parts None Spinning platters
Shock resistance Excellent Poor
Noise Silent Audible clicking/spinning
Cost per GB Higher (but worth it) Lower
SSD TYPES: SATA VS NVMe

SATA SSD

Speeds up to ~550 MB/s. A massive improvement over HDD but slower than NVMe. Found in older and budget laptops. Still a worthwhile upgrade over any HDD.

NVMe SSD

Speeds of 3,000–7,000 MB/s — up to 7× faster than SATA. Standard in most laptops made after 2018. Always upgrade to NVMe if your laptop supports it.

WHEN TO UPGRADE

  • Laptop takes more than 60 seconds to boot
  • Applications take a long time to open
  • Constant disk activity (grinding noise, HDD LED always on)
  • Running out of storage space on a small original drive
PEOPLE ALSO ASK

Will an SSD upgrade make my laptop faster?

Yes — dramatically, if upgrading from an HDD. Boot times drop from minutes to under 20 seconds. It is the single most impactful hardware upgrade for any laptop still running a spinning hard drive.

How long do SSDs last?

Most consumer SSDs are rated for 5–10 years of typical use. They are more durable than HDDs because they have no moving parts.

Will my data be transferred when I upgrade to an SSD?

Yes — we include free data migration with all SSD upgrades. Your files, programs, and settings are cloned to the new drive.
